A design toolkit for neighbourhoods,
streets, homes and public spaces

Vistry recognises the role that the built environment has on people’s health and wellbeing and the importance of placemaking in improving the health of local communities.

The healthy placemaking principles of Building for Healthy Life form the foundations of our vision to create a sustainable new community that is integrated into and positively responds to the site and the wider natural and built surroundings. The provision of a range of housing types and tenures of homes together with schools, parks, sports facilities, public transport services and local centres are designed to meet local community needs.

Through active travel design we ensure access for all, making car-free travel more attractive, safe, convenient and an instinctive choice for everyone. Dedicated walking/cycling routes and well-designed street spaces will connect people with places that offer social, leisure, recreational and public transport opportunities only a short walk or cycle from their homes.

Landscaping and drainage design will enrich the public realm and help improve a sense of wellbeing and offer an interaction with nature whilst increasing ecology and biodiversity value. The site’s historical context will be reflected and safeguarded through the conservation of the former runway alignments as linear ‘Runway Parks’ and the retention and enhancement of the listed pillboxes.

The planning application is accompanied by a Building for a Healthy Life Assessment (contained within the Design and Access Statement) that considers in further detail the proposals for the site against the principles and ethos of Building for a Healthy Life demonstrating how these underpin and have been incorporated into the design and the proposals for this new, truly sustainable community.
